Space – the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Its five-year mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before.
These are the very words of Captain Kirk played by William Shatner. Now I don’t know who I’m speaking to right now, but its best to know, I am NOT a Star Trek fan. I’m actually a huge Star Wars fan. However, I wanted to start off this piece of writing with this quote simply because I watched the recent Star Trek movie and it ended with the famous quote that majority of us know. I actually want to focus on the last part, “to boldly go where no man has gone before” Now we all know that the space that is being talked about in this context is outer space, planets, galaxies, universe, etc. The space I want to talk about is your own personal space.
We all are familiar with the famous term, “I need space” or “I want space” I’m not even going to get in depth with when you can or have used these terms before. But regardless of the context its used in, let me shed a bit of light on this term. The definition states, its ‘a continuous area or expanse which is free, available, or unoccupied’ I’m going to challenge this definition by adding, space is determined by it’s boundaries. Now boundaries are good. For example, the open vast oceans have boundaries, the sky even has boundaries, your room has a boundary, the highways which you drive on have boundaries. Well then, whatever is inside that boundary is considered space. What is YOUR space??
My space is not a walk in the park. My space is not going to the beach. My space is not being in a cafe. My space is probably boring to you. And for that reason, I won’t say it unless you want me to say it. (It’s a test to see if you’re reading ha!) You gotta find what your space is. How do you go on to do that? You can either google it or you can find out on your own. But can you create it??
Now we’re talking. Creating your space is actually vital to where I’m headed in this blog. We are all creative people. We all have the ability to do something, make something, say something, hear something, taste something that others cannot. We all have this massive gift that looks so very tiny in its raw form. But before you can refine the rawness of that something special, you need to ‘create’ a space for yourself. Technically, its not even for you. Its a space for that gift to manifest within that space. You need to have room for that gift to be displayed and outworked. What do I mean by that?
If you want to build the largest bridge in the world, you cannot do it in your apartment room. You need to find the space or even better, create the space.
My space varies – sometimes the space is small, sometimes boundless, but you’re right, it’s important to create that space to be able to create anything else.
